Working into a “B” Language. Pitfalls, tips and tricks

This research paper focuses on simultaneous interpreting into a “B” language, a mode of interpreting which has become increasingly common in interpreting markets worldwide. We attempt to analyze the features of this mode of interpreting and to establish differences and similarities between cognitive processes of SI when working into an “A” language versus working into a “B” language. For this purpose, we describe and analyze the evolution of interpreting into a “B” language, features in bilingualism, differences and similarities between bilinguals and interpreters, cognitive process involved in simultaneous interpreting, advantages and disadvantages of interpreting into a “B” language and strategies for this specific mode of interpreting. The conclusions of this research have a two-fold aim: to provide a general perspective of what interpreting into a “B” language is and to offer material for teachers to be able to design exercises in light of the strategies they wish their students to hone when training for this mode of interpreting
